Practice Logging, XP, and Streaks
Student PortalOn this page (7 sections)
Nova’s practice system makes practicing more engaging for students. They can log sessions, track progress, and earn rewards.
Logging practice
Students can log practice from the Portal’s Practice page in two ways:
Using the built-in timer
- Open the Practice page in the portal
- Select a practice category (scales, repertoire, sight reading, etc.)
- Click Start Timer
- Practice! The timer runs in the background
- Click Stop when done
- The session is automatically logged
Manual entry
If a student practiced without the timer:
- Open the Practice page
- Click Log Practice
- Select the category and enter the duration
- Click Save
Practice categories
Students can categorize their practice into:
- Scales — Scales, arpeggios, warm-ups
- Repertoire — Songs and pieces
- Sight Reading — Reading new music
- Technique — Exercises and drills
- Theory — Music theory study
- Ear Training — Listening and interval recognition
This helps both students and teachers see where practice time is being spent.
XP and Levels
Every practice session earns XP (experience points). Students level up as they accumulate XP, similar to a game progression system.
- Longer sessions earn more XP
- Completing quests earns bonus XP
- Students can see their level and progress on the Progress page
Streaks
A streak is the number of consecutive days a student has practiced. Streaks are a powerful motivator — students don’t want to break their streak!
The streak counter appears on the Portal Dashboard and the Progress page.
Encourage students to practice even for a few minutes each day to keep their streak going. Short, consistent sessions are more effective than occasional long ones.
Weekly goals
Teachers can set weekly practice goals for each student (e.g., “Practice 30 minutes, 5 days this week”). Students see their progress toward the goal on the Practice page.
